The traditional technique for producing the handmade soap remains largely unchanged since its origins centuries ago. The saponification process takes place in a large heated vat where the olive oil, lye and water are carefully mixed together for several hours, before the warm, viscous mixture is laid out on an expansive horizontal surface in a flat layer around two inches thick. Here it is smoothed out and left to solidify for up to a day. Once the soap is hard enough, individual squares are marked out for the artisan who, armed with a long wood handled soap cutter, proceeds to expertly carve out each bar of soap. Finally, the bars are stacked in drying towers for up to five months before being packaged.
